METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY

it might appear at first glance that it's rain falling from the Manhatten sky as an equally weathered looking Solid Snake ventures forth into the elements, cigarette in hand. Despite the appearance of rain, what is actually tumbling from the heavens is pure liquid atmosphere. Harry Gregson Williams' wonderful score begins to kick in and we're right back into the mould of gasping in dutiful admiration at the work of without doubt gaming's coolest leading man.

The cinematic experience that Hideo Kojima has always strived for was finally realised by the new power of the Playstation 2, and the gaming world in turn was astounded by the beauty of scenes created using the graphics engine alone. it's a really well put together scene and there's few better sites in videogames than a perfect infiltration from the master of the stealth genre. There's also a great homage to Terminator 2 as Snake's stealth suit becomes damaged, one of the numerous nods to classic films that Kojima loves to throw in throughout the series.

MGS2 ultimately probably suffered from the director's over zealous use of the 'twist' at the expense of what fans actually wanted (ie to play as Snake throughout). The already complicated story was also a mess of unfinished narative threads by the end of proceedings, but we should all remember how brilliant the opening of the game was. Like fans of classic film will 'always have Paris', us gamers will always have the Tanker level.
